Creativity and Genre

     Without creativity, society would not be able to move forward. Creativity is needed in every aspect of our lives. We need creativity in our personal lives, our educational settings, and our work settings. In the Ted Talk we watched last week, that is what the speaker was talking about. He used creativity to solve problems they had in the Disney parks, and it worked. This is why it is essential to incorporate creativity in new settings that have constraints so that creativity can help overcome these obstacles and/or problems. According to Ron Beghetto, "creativity can survive even thrive within constraints." This quote exemplifies not only the importance of creativity but also the importance of creative self-efficacy. Creative self-efficacy is creative self-confidence and how it is needed to take beautiful risks that can have amazing outcomes. 

    Creatively thinking can be approaching an idea in a new way to see if the benefits can outweigh the costs. For example, in class we did an activity called "New Introductions" where instead of saying normal introductions (such as each person's name and where they are from) we say our favorite books, movies, our bucket list, or even what is in our closet. This is a unique way to get to know someone without having to go through the normal boring process. In this case, the costs (maybe the other person does not like this method) can outweigh the benefits (might look embarrassing to start with something new). 

    In class we have researched the different movie tropes and the different movie genres. When learning about the different movie tropes, there were quite a bit of stereotypical horror movie ones. For example, the girl running in heels or the "hello?" (where someone walks into a dark ominous room and yells "hello") are such common horror movie tropes. Also in the research, I learned about the genre of experimental where the movie does something completely unique based off in an artistic approach. Another genre I have always liked and am excited to possibly try is comedy (I love making people laugh). 

    My partner and I discussed what our movie should be about and what genre we want to make it, and we decided that we wanted it to be satirizing the classic movie tropes that have been used for so long. Specifically, we want to target the horror movie tropes where, realistically, a person would not make the same decisions as the main character. Therefore, making our movie a horror comedy such as the movie, Scary Movie.

    The director of Scary Movie (Keenan Ivory Wayans) has been creatively a part of a couple experimental and comedy films. I want to emulate his work because it was shocking to see a movie target the classic horror movies and I want to give that shock factor in my movie. What I do not want to emulate is the crude humor or the racial jokes because that would not be appropriate for this film and we would not be able to write it in a way that is funny.
