Magazine Cover Review

Each magazine has its own theme. Whether it is a craft magazine or a fashion magazine, they all have an intended audience and use different methods to highlight their theme. Magazines like GQ with the cover of Travis Scott, know how to grab the attention of its audience. The bright colors and the theme of "change" which relates to the times society is facing right now. This exemplifies the importance of understanding the audience and current events that affect your audience. According to the article Does Size Matter?, "There is still and always will be a sizable audience for larger pieces of excellent journalism". This outlines that as long as the magazine understands who they are creating the magazine for, they can succeed in selling to the people.

An important aspect of the magazine is the cover page. In Men's Health magazine, the cover has bold sentences and phrases that relate to what the magazine talks about inside. The cover related to current events to capture the understanding of what people are feeling today, yet still circled it back to what the whole magazine is about. In Oprah's magazine cover, she normally has a picture of herself, but in a recent magazine she put Breonna Taylor on the front so she can receive justice. This is important because it even though most people feel her anger, it pushes the boundaries of her current audience.

Although magazines have been around for a long time, the question is how long they will be around. According to Michael Scherer, the "magazine-reading future...will be bite-sized." Magazines like Rolling Stone contain articles that are pages and pages long. Again, understanding the demographics and emotions the audience is feeling, the magazines need to adjust to the changing society. Some people might not have the attention span or time to read long pages of articles. That is why magazines like Cosmopolitan use bold colors and fonts to grab the reader's attention. Or in magazines like Southern Living, the pictures and the desire to become or do what they show the audience. These magazines know they have to target the audience's emotions, desires, and sometimes even hates.

Even though magazines are a unique way to show artistic expression, I am not going to be choosing this medium for my portfolio. I love the way magazines use colors and pictures to convey a message to its readers. I personally have a love for crafts and art and a magazine could be a great way to connect this. However, my passion of telling a story through video overpowers my love of making something artistic. Movies just have a way of showing a narrative that can inspire and affect a person more than a magazine can.
